My dad passed away in 1963. He had been killed in a freak accident on Guam. He had been a SeaBee in the Navy. I was four at the time.

My mom always told me that she felt sorry for me for losing my dad so young and so she felt like I needed something to take my mind off of his death. Now remember I was only four and didn't really know what had happened but anyway, she bought me a dog. A cute little Toy Fox Terrier to be exact at the regal sum of $35. And trust me, that was a lot of money back in 1963 and for us.

At first she wanted to name her Prissy but back then I had a terrible time saying r's and when I said Prissy, it came out Pissy. Um, you can imagine my mom's reaction to that so Prissy became Cricket. :)

Cricket was a feisty little dog and she and I had a game I called the "shhhhhh" game. I would say shhhhhh shhhhhh to her and Cricket would chase me through the house while I laughed and screamed and ran for safety on my bed. I'd get under the covers and she would come in after me to give me dog kisses.

Cricket slept with me every night, curled up in a ball at my feet under the cover.

She didn't like strangers and would bark like crazy whenever anyone knocked on the door and she detested the neighbor kid, Jeff, because he always teased her and threw sticks at her over the fence. I remember one time she got out and bit him on the butt. But I digress. :)

She was never sick a day in her life and when she died it happened quickly. She had tried to jump on the bed and in mid-air something happened. She missed and fell to the floor. She had some kind of seizure.

I put her on the bed and yelled for my mom to come help. I called the vet's office, it was after hours and I had to leave a message. By the time he called, about two hours later she was gone. I was in tears when I answered the phone and he asked me what's wrong with my dog. Through the tears I remember yelling nothing's wrong anymore, she's dead.

At that point he asked to talk to my mom cause after all, I was only 15. She explained what happened. The next day we took Cricket to the vet's office and left her there.

I have no idea if there were pet cemeteries back then or if people even thought to ask for their pets ashes back. I know I didn't think about it and neither did my mom.

Cricket was my first dog and will forever remain special in my heart.
