Services were held at the Cottonwood Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon for Joseph Renfro Battles, 82, who died at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 26.
The Rev. Ron Abbott conducted the funeral and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery at Steele with H.S. Smith Funeral Home service.
Mr. Battles was born in Wayne county, Tenn. on January 10, 1882 and was the son of William Henry and Susie Battles. In Tennessee, on January 28, 1900, he was married to Miss Isabell Hill and the family moved to Pemiscot county in 1929. He was a farmer for many years until he retired and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Isabell Battles of Cottonwood Point; four sons, William H. of Chicago, Frank of Melrose Park, Ill., Ted of Summit, Ill. and Warren G. Battles of Cottonwood Point; three daughters, Mrs. Martha Robinson of Cottonwood Point, Mrs. Jodie Mead of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Mrs. Tessie Odom of Wardell; 31 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
