He was born on February 2, 1912 in Merrill to the late Francis and Margaret (Barden) Van Slate. He married Dorothy King-Wettstein on August 10, 1968 in Portage.
He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army's 495th Triple A Gun Battalion in Europe. He was with the Allied Forces during the invasion of Normandy Beach on D-Day on June 6, 1945. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and was formerly employed at the Wausau Iron Works.
He is survived by his wife; three sisters Mrs Helen Rohrbacher, Milwaukee; Mrs. Agnes Gentz, Kenosha; and Mrs. Yvonne Krowlikowski of Milwaukee.
Funeral services were held on on Friday, January 18, 1995 at the Schram Waid Funeral Home in Merrill. The Rev. Paul Schofield officiated and burial was in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery.
