He was a B-24 pilot with the 15th Air Force of the United States during World War II, and flew a C-47 in Korea, completing 75 missions.

Following military service, Hugh was employed by Halliburton Co. working in Abilene (1955-68), Palestine, and Gainesville, returning to Abilene in 1973. He retired as district manager after a 38-year career. He was a member of Abilene Bible Church in Abilene.
