US Congressman. Served in the United States Army during World War II. Elected to represent California's 17th, 32nd, and 35th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1969 to 1993. Also served as Mayor of Hawthorne, California, from 1940 to 1943, Member of the California State Assembly from 1943 to 1951, California Democratic State Chair in 1950, Candidate for California State Senate in 1950, and Lieutenant Governor of California from 1959 to 1967.
