US Congressman. Born in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, he moved to Ipava, Illinois and taught school. He then moved to Beloit, Kansas, where he served as principal of the town's public schools, moved to Logan, Kansas, in 1880 and engaged in banking, as well as in irrigation farming. In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1911. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, in 1913, where he engaged in banking and in the real estate business. He died at age 80 in Beverly Hills, California.
