U.S. Congressman. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, moved to Arkansas in 1854 and was a candidate of the Union supporters for delegate to the Arkansas State convention in 1861. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he opposed secession, was arrested for his disloyalty against the Confederate Government and was imprisoned. He moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1864, engaged in the real estate business and returned to Arkansas, in 1868. In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was postmaster at Pine Bluff, Arkansas (1881-85), moved to California in 1888 and engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death.
