U.S. Congressman. He attended Bloomfield Academy and Waterville College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced to practice law in Brandon, Mississippi. He was editor of the Mississippian newspaper, a member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives in 1836 and reporter of the State of Mississippi Supreme Court. Moving to San Antonio, Texas, in 1847, he practiced law and was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving (1849-53). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he relocated to California, practiced law, was Los Angeles District Attorney, (1861-70) and was judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles, (1879-81).
