Emelia is the daughter of Hans Nikolaisen Elvestad and Karoline Oldsdatter Muem, each of them were born and died in Norway.

Nels and Emelia were the parents of 14 sons and 4 daughters. One son died in infancy and another, Jens, at the age of 13. In 1927 the remaining 12 sons formed a baseball team that spent the next three summers playing baseball on a circuit that was active within 30 miles of their home. The team included 9 players, a first and third base coach as well as a bat boy. They played almost exclusively on Sunday's when they were largely free from farm chores.

Nels and Emelia were devout Lutherans and believed playing baseball on Sunday was a sin. They never attended a game.
