Physician and Librarian of Congress. A physician in Terre Haute, Indiana, and ardent political supporter of Abraham Lincoln, he was rewarded by Lincoln with his appointment as fifth Librarian of Congress in 1861. He appointed a more serious bookman, Ainsworth R. Spofford, as his Assistant Librarian, and when he resigned in 1864, Spofford succeeded him as Librarian. His grave is unmarked.
