Charles T. Strattan was an Atty and a politician .
Moved with his Father Stephen T. to Mercer County ,Illinois 1855 and then in 1857 to Mt Vernon, Illinois. He attended Mt.Vernon Seminary and McKendree College, two years at Washington University, at St Louis and two years at the Wesleyan University,at Delaware, Ohio finishing his school course in 1872. He then returned home from Delaware and being in poor health he was advised by the family physician to teach a term of school some distance in the country. This he did, taking a school at $30 a month and rode on horseback a distance of 5 miles to and from the school each day. By the close of school he was able to resume his studies at the University of Delaware in Ohio. In 1874 he became Principal of the Mt Vernon High School. One Year later he became Principal at the Nashville Illinois High School. Then he took charge of the Schools of Edwardsville, IL. In 1878 he was invited to take a position at Washington University at St. Louis which he accepted for two years. He not only was a teacher but he studied law while he was there. In the spring of 1880 he was admitted to the Bar, and in the same year was nominated and elected from the Forty-Sixth District to the Thirty- Second General assembly of the State of Illinois. In 1882 he was the Republican nominee for State Superintendent of Public Instruction but was defeated. In 1882 he resumed the practice of Law in Mt Vernon,and on March 09, 1883 he was appointed by Gov. Hamilton as one of the three Railroad and Warehouse Commissioners for the State of Illinois He passed away on Sept 21, 1893 at Mt Vernon,IL. and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery. There is no evidence he ever married.
