Henry Kane Carter was born March 23, 1852 in Scott County, VA and died May 8, 1882 in Hawkins County, TN. He was the second of seven children of Winfield Carter (b. 1828, d. 22 Nov. 1882) and Flavilla Durham Carter (b. 1834, d. about 1900). He was an seventh generation descendant of Captain Thomas Carter, Jr., who migrated from England to Lancaster County, VA in the mid 1600s.
On 17 Oct. 1869 Henry Kane Carter married Amanda Jane Taylor (who was not quite twelve years old) and they settled on a farm up on the southern ridge on the eastern border of the Sizemore farm in Pumpkin Valley, Eidson, Hawkins County, TN, which was where Amanda was raised. Henry didn't marry Amanda because he had to. It's thought that were at least one or more reasons: after the death of Amanda's father John R. Taylor, a corporal in the Union Army who died at the Battle of Nashville in 1864, in 1865 after the close of the war, her mother remarried to a much older fellow soldier, William J. Price. Perhaps she just wanted to leave home due to the family changes to wit: she and her siblings were placed under court-approved guardianship in May 1866 in order to receive their father's military pension due to their mother's remarriage. In any event, Henry and Amanda's first child wasn't born until seven years later in 1876.
Henry and Amanda were the parents of three children:
Cicero Carter, born Oct. 1876, died 1917 in Willow Shoals, KY. Married to Victoria Fields of Speers Ferry, VA.
Rev. Andrew Jackson "Jack" Carter, born 18 July 1878, died 12 Jan. 1958. Married to LouVerna Manis on 18 Aug. 1901. Buried in Jones Cemetery, Pumpkin Valley, Hancock County, TN.
Ida Carter Sizemore, born 8 Sept. 1880, died 11 Feb. 1937 of pneumonia. Married to H.W. Sizemore in 1899. Mother to thirteen children.

Was baptized into the fellowship of the Walnut Grove Church in the Fall of 1875, lived a consistent member of that church till 1878, when he and his wife lettered off and joined the Beech Hill Church, and soon afterwards was elected Clerk of the church, was a clerk a while and then ordained Deacon of that church."
"He was sick about two months, or better, though he suffered much-yet he endured with all Christian patience his affliction till the end. On the day of his death he told his wife he would soon be gone, and asked her if she was not glad, for said he, "I will soon be with my Savior." He left a wife and three children to mourn his loss, but their loss was his eternal gain. The church lost one of it's brightest lights and most active members, for he was a man that did not only believe in Christian performance, but also in Christian perseverance, able in prayer and exhortation."
