Bechtel was a 19 year old boatman when he enlisted in Company C. 50th PA Volunteer Infantry in Schuylkill Haven on 14 August 1861. He was mustered into federal service at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA on 9 September 1861.
His name does not appear on the on muster out roll of Company C due to his being detached to the Signal Corps.
Entered the Signal Corps as a Private and later rose to Sergeant in the volunteer service. Later served in the Signal Corps in the Regular Army
