U.S. Congressman. Born the son of US Congressman Robert Augustine Thompson, he studied journalism at the Buffalo Academy, Virginia. He moved to Sonoma County, California, in 1855, was the editor of the Sonoma Democrat newspaper, served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880 and was the California State Secretary, (1882-86). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. After his term, he was appointed the California commissioner to the World’s Fair Chicago Illinois, in 1891 and served as the US Minister to Brazil, (1893-97).
