Joseph Arthur Lennon, formerly of Bush Road, Cummington, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Rosewood Assisted Living Facility in Pittsfield.

Born June 9, 1925 in Dalton, the son of Hugh F. Lennon Sr. and Margaret T. Croughwell, he was a graduate of the former Dalton High School.

Joseph entered the Army on September 10, 1943, and served with the 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division in Scotland, England, France, Germany, and Austria.

He served as a member of a light mortar crew, carrying ammunition and later as an assistant gunner. He used the M60 machine gun against enemy personnel, lines of communication, and vehicle; for his first two weeks in combat, he was a riflemen.

Joseph was taken as a prisoner of war at the Maselle River in France on September 11, 1944, and was liberated from Stalag 317 at Marft Pongau, Austria of May 8, 1945. He was honorably discharged on December 17, 1945.

For his service during World War II, Joseph received the following Medals and Ribbons, first and foremost the POW Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

During the late 50's and early 60's, he taught safe driving at Reynolds's Auto Driving School. Later he started his employment at General Electric in Ordnance Manufacturing division, working for thirty-six 1/2 years, retiring as a production clerk retirement in 1990.

He was a longtime member of West Cummington Congregational Church. Joseph enjoyed driving, watching his beloved New York Yankees, and caning chairs which he did for many years. He especially enjoyed his summer vacations at York Beach, Maine.

Joseph was a member of the Benjamin F. Sullivan Post #155 American Legion in Dalton, the Anthony J. DeAngelus Post 9566 in Dalton, a life member of the Ex-POW association and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He leaves his beloved wife, Ruth A. Dexheimer of Cummington, whom he married on December 7, 1968; his two children from a previous marriage, Cheryl A. Lennon and her husband, Bill Stoll, and B.J. Lennon, both of Pittsfield. Joseph was predeceased by a sister, Mary Alice Lennon, and by a brother, Hugh F. Lennon Jr.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Charles Young, HospiceCare in the Berkshires Chaplain, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Dalton.
A visitation will be held the day of the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral.
