From the Journal of Rev. Leibensperger "Son of Elias & wife Sarah Beck (Snader). Baptized in infancy, Married 3 times. Lived in Altoona, Pa. for many years. Died at home of sister (Mrs James Fry) at Red Run. Civil War Veteran ( 97th Reg. of Penna. Inft.) Services in U.B. Ch., Ephrata, at 2 p.m. Rev. Rhoad, the pastor, conducted the services. I preached & had burial service. Aged 79-3-27. Survived by 4 sons, etc., & sisters, & brothers, etc."

"John Beck, Civil War Veteran, Died in Red Run."
"John Beck, age 79 years, 4 months and 27 days, died late Friday afternoon at the home of his sister Mrs. James Fry, at Red Run, Brecknock township.
The deceased was a Civil War Veteran, having served as a private in Company F, 97 th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was enrolled in the service on Feb. 24th, 1865, and was discharged August 28, 1865 at Weldon, N.C. under Captain Lewis R. Malin.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Emma Jane Dolby, and these children: Herbert L. Beck, Altoona, Pa., William Beck, Youngstown, O. : John H. Beck Altoona. Another son, Elmer T. Beck, died some time ago at the National Solders' Home, Dayton, Ohio, and was buried in the burial plot of Cloister Post, No. 429, American Legion, in Mt. Zion cemetery, near Ephrata. The following step-children also survive: James R. Dolby, of Holidaysburg; Lewis Dolby and Mrs Ella Becker, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Berta Inlow, Altoona. and Mrs. Viola Dodge, Altoona. Two Brothers and a sister also survive. Isreal Beck, Kissel Hill; William Beck, Denver, R.D., and Mrs. James Fry, Stevens, R.D. at whose home the deceased passed away.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon, June 4th, at 2 o'clock, with services in the United Brethren church, Ephrata, and with interment in Mr. Zion cemetery, near Ephrata. Rev. E. M. Rhoad and Rev. A.W. Leibensperger officiated. and Funeral Directors Eitnier and Hoffman had charge."
