Tom was born November 7, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Thomas Talmadge and Mary Brown Lively. Tom excelled in sports early on and was a basketball standout on the team at Boys High School in Atlanta. After graduating from high school, Tom continued his love of basketball on the team at Duke University where he graduated in 1950 with a business degree.

Tom found his home in Brunswick when he transferred with General Motors Corporation where he met the love of his life, Exer Armstrong who worked for Coastal Chevrolet as a bookkeeper. Later going to work with Coastal Chevrolet himself, Tom worked for the Owens family business for over 30 years as the manager and Secretary/Treasurer of Coastal Chevrolet Corporation. His trademark "crew cut" earned him the affectionate name "Crew" with his close-knit "Coastal Chevrolet family."

Proud of his college alma mater, Tom continued to support the Duke Blue Devils and was a life member in the Iron Dukes. Knowing that Duke University was too far to travel to support his team, Tom adopted the Georgia Bulldogs. Of course, his college roommate, Frank Inman, former recruiter for the Dogs, heavily influenced his decision to sit between the hedges for over 40 years.

A health and fitness enthusiast, Tom was a long-time participant at St. Simons Health and Fitness Center and in his working career he could be seen doing his brisk walks regularly between Coastal Chevrolet and the post office.
Tom was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick where he served on the Finance Committee, the Beach Trust Committee, and was the General Secretary for the Sunday School for well over thirty years. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Phi Delta Theta, Exchange Club of Brunswick, and served as a member of the Glynn County Board of Education for ten years.

Tom was never without a smile and an encouraging word for others. He believed strongly in education and supported many young people in their educational and athletic pursuits. He was very proud of taking active roles in the lives of Willie McClendon and Melvin Lattany, who gained All-American status at the University of Georgia.

Tom was pre-deceased by his wife, Exer, whom he missed dearly.

Survivors include his daughter, Melinda L. Laager of St. Simons Island; his grandson, Matthew T. Laager of Savannah, GA, who was the apple of his eye; his sister-in-law Celesta Pittman of Brunswick and numerous cousins in the Atlanta area.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Tom Lively Education Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 708 Mansfield Street, Brunswick, GA 31520.

Arrangements are entrusted to Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, GA.
