John William McCree, Sr

One of 13 children born in Athens, GA to Martha Hale McCree, widow of a white Union Soldier in the Civil War. He was affectionately known as "Big Dad". He born at a time when the bitter legacy of slavery and Reconstruction still poisoned the lives of African American's. He was a beloved father and the wife of Josephine M.McCree and also uncle to the nations second African-American Solicitor General, Wade McCree, Jr. After marriage, McCree and his wife settled and built a house in College Park, Georgia where they raised their children. John worked as a carpenter/brick mason. He eventually became one of the leading men in the African-American community of College Park. He also was a member of College Park's Friendship Baptist Church (now Friendship Community Church). He departed this life on Christmas Day of 1943.
