🎹 Martha H. Singleton was one of eleven children born to Rev. John Thomas and Anna Bishop Singleton, pioneers in the C.M.E. Church. She was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia on Sept. 14, 1908. At an early age the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended E. P. Johnson Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School, Morris Brown College, Atlanta University, and Virginia State College, Petersburg, Virginia. Singleton was later awarded the Master's Degree in Music Education from New York University. In the year 1922, she joined her families church, Atlanta's Butler Street C.M.E. Church, where her father served as pastor and where she was a faithful, and loyal member for fifty-four years. Singleton's musical training and innate ability enabled her to serve numerous churches as organist and choir director. She gave generously of her time and means in support of the furtherance of God's kingdom. Singleton was also a dedicated teacher and choral director for the Atlanta Public School System, retiring in 1973, after completing a tenure of forty-two years. Throughout her life she was endowed with an outgoing personality which enabled her to acquire many devoted friends. Martha Singleton never married and departed this life in Atlanta suddenly on April 1, 1976. The song ended, but the melody lingers on.
