Rosella Gordon, native of Anna, dies day before 106th birthday.
Rosella Gordon, who remembered covered wagons passing her family's Union County farm when she was a child, died Wednesday in Carbondale, one day before her 106th birthday. Mrs Gordon, the mother of eight, remained active for over a century as she lived through Southern Illinois history since her birthday six years after the Civil War.
We had no electricity until we moved to Anna, I was 66 years old then. "Mrs. Gordon said in an interview on her 97th birthday.
She's our family's anchorman, "Mrs. Joseph Hewitt, of Carbondale, her daughter, said on the 100th anniversary of her mother's birthday.
Mrs. Gordon died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 31, 1977, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. She had been making her home with Mrs. Hewitt.
She was born on Sept. 1, 1871, near Anna, the daughter of John and Melvina Hileman Barringer.
She married John C. Gordon on Sept 1, 1892. He died Feb 9, 1949.
She was a member of Camp Ground Cumberland Presbyterian Church, east of Anna.
Survivors include two sons, Malby of Carbondale and Ralph E. of Horseheads, N.Y; three daughters, Mrs. J. E. Hewitt of Carbondale, Mrs. Lowell Kairaker of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Mrs. H. Steinke of Hollywood, Florida; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Reba and Mabel, died in infancy. One daughter, Sibly Lowrance, died in 1972.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Crain Funeral Home in Anna. Burial will be in the Camp Ground Cemetery, East of Anna. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the Crain Funeral Home.
