George W. Turner, a well known citizen of Pittsburg NH, died September 24th at the West Stewartstown Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held from the Farnham Memorial Methodist Church Sunday afternoon. He was born in Wentworth Location, NH, February 22, 1894, the son of James R. and Julia Haynes Turner. Here in the public schools of his native town he received his early education and then, following the family tradition and interests, he engaged in the lumbering business with his father and in "driving logs" on the Androscoggin River, an experience that never really got out of his blood and he had a wealth of stories and experiences of "the Drive" that he loved to tell. As a young man he came to Pittsburg to work and for 40 years has been one of its citizens respected by all for his sound attitudes toward the community's good. Here he was married to Miss Nellie Aldrich some 37 years ago. And though no children ever came to bless the home, George was a great lover of little children and often made glad their little hearts by the Lolly Pops and ice cream cones that seemed to come so mysteriously from nowhere when he was around. Mr. Turner had been a member of the Grange for 32 years and of the Knights of Pythias for a somewhat longer period. During the past few years he had been employed by the State Highway Dept. in road maintenance. Besides his wife, Mr. Turner is survived by his mother, Mrs Julia Turner, of Portland, Maine, two brothers, Alfred C. of Colebrook and Odian, of Wentworth Location and a sister, Mrs Thelma Longley, of Colebrook.
