I believe the stone is probably a cenotaph. From records and family letters, Matthew Chamberlain died 7 April 1862 the second day of the battle of Pittsburg Landing/Shiloh Battlefield. Matthew was one of 2359 unknown soldiers buried in the Shiloh National Cemetery. There are individual numbered stones for the unknown men who died as a result of the battle of April 6th & 7th.
Matthew and his brother Andrew had enlisted with the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 2 Oct 1861. He signed up for a three years of service.
Matthew's wife, Martha Chamberlain, applied for a pension on 22 Nov 1862.
