North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Bride: Elisabeth Graddy
Groom: John Shuffield
Bond Date: 29 Sep 1779
County: Duplin
Record #: 01 077
Bondsman: Samuel Bowden
Witness: Wm Dickson (Clerk of Court
Bond #: 000042379

Elizaberh's father was Thomas Graddy. She was a cousin to her first husband.
Elizabeth was the widow of John Graddy prior to her marriage to John Shuffield. 1784-1787 Census Duplin County, NC.
68. John Graddy Sr, 1-1-3-2-1
69. Fred Graddy 1-4-3-1-1
96. William Graddy 1-4-4-2-2

There was one son of that first marriage: William Graddy. There was some confustion whether or not Elizabeth's maiden name was West, but it turns out that was her mother-in-law's maiden name. John Graddy her first husband was the son of William Graddy and Elizabeth West Graddy.

John and Mary Whitield Graddy had a grandson (son of William Graddy, my ggg-grandfather), John Graddy who was the one killed at Moore's Creek Bridge. Now here is where the Elizabeth West comes in. Elizabeth West was this John Graddy's mother. She was my ggg-grandmother. I hope this helps to clear up the Elizabeth West conflict. Ken

Ken also states that Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas Graddy and a cousin to John Graddy her first husband. However another source says that no Thomas Graddy is known, therefore Elizabeth's father is still unknown, though it is thought by some in that family line that she may also have been a Graddy.

In the Court Records after Elizabeth's oldest son William Graddy died ALL of William's half-brothers and sister are named. It appears to be in the order of their birth. Wright, Isham, Bryant, West, Arthur and Tabitha. This was a suit filed against the Administrator of William Grady's Estate. It is long, but the value is the naming of Elizabeth and John's children, separating them from the children of John's first wife, Nancy Turner.
