Frances Caroline Coffey was one off sixteen children born to McCaleb Coffey and his wife Elizabeth Collett Coffey. Her father was a farmer in the upper Yadkin River Valley of Caldwell County, NC. Her date of birth is disputed. The date given on her grave marker is contradicted by successive Federal census listings and her own death certificate which states her date of birth as June 7, 1845. This seems the more probable.

On December 24, 1868, Caroline married David Fathing.
