Victims identified
The Florida Highway Patrol has released the names of two men killed Monday when they were struck by an out-of-control car as they walked in the emergency parking lane of I-95 south of Delray Beach.
A highway patrol spokesman said James Franklin Konvicka, 34, of El Campo, Tex., and James Arthur Monagon, 42, of Sheffield, Ohio, were killed instantly when a motorist lost control of his car in the northbound lane of I-95 about three-quarters of a mile south of Atlantic Blvd. The car veered into the parking lane, hit the two men, then hit a light pole and a parked FHP patrol car before stopping. The falling light pole almost hit the [officer] who was near his squad car making a routine traffic stop.
William Joseph Lee, Jr., of 14475 Gallagher Rd., Delray Beach, the driver of the car, was unharmed. He has been charged with reckless driving, police said, and the incident is still under investigation.
