Marcos was born in Alacranes, Cuba to Pedro Cabrera Guera (a native of La Palma, Canary Islands) and Andrea Gonsales Flaita (a native of Guanajay, Cuba). He may have had a brother named Jesus. Marcos married Nieves Caballero. They had at least seven children: Marcos Jr., America (memorial #73691130), Florinda, Esteban, Christina, Rita, and Jesus. What became of his first wife, Nieves, is unknown.

He married Henrietta Elsie Jane Tudge Chase in 1902 (New York City) but probably had married her much earlier than that in Cuba based on statements in the 1900 US Census. Together they had at least five children: Rosanna (Rosita), Victor, and Ramon died before the age of 3; Christina and Leocadia lived into adulthood. Both Christina and Leocadia were born in Cuba in the 1880s and it appears that the family lived there for that entire decade.

Marcos became a citizen of the United States Jan. 11, 1875. He lived and worked in New York City during the late 1870s and again in the early 1890s through the early 1920s. Key West, FL may have been his home for a short while in 1887. He was a Cuban cigar maker. His daughter, Leocadia, cared for him in his later years until his death in 1923.
