James was born to Samuel Goodell and Sarah ‘Sally’ Brown. Though born in New York, James lived most of his life in Illinois. In 1852, he married Elizabeth Isabel Ketchum. She died in 1875. James remarried in 1882 to a woman named Susan Higdon. He was 25 years older and would die only five years later, in 1887, at the age of 58. Susan died 49 years later, in 1936.

James served alongside his brother Levi during the last year of the American Civil War. They were enlisted in Company D of the 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was living in Lee, Fulton County, Illinois at the time. His height was listed as five foot, seven and three-quarter inches. His hair was brown and his eyes blue with a light skin complexion. He joined on March 21, 1865 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois for a one-year term. A Captain Westlake is the man who did the paperwork. He and his brother were mustered out in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 14, 1865.
