ELLINWOOD — Frederick Lawrence Hiss, 81, died July 25 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Oct. 26, 1929 in Great Bend, he was the son of Fred Hiss and Mary Janne Hiss. A lifetime resident of Barton County and Rice County, he worked at Merring's Inc. as an appliance repairman from 1956-57 and was a farmer. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1947. On Aug. 26, 1956 he married Elinor Bryant in Ellinwood.
Mr. Hiss served in the Korean War . He was active in Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, financial secretary, choir and elder. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood, was in Lutheran Laymen's League serving on local, zone and state boards including LLL -LWML Family Retreat for five years, LLL Reporter, Electricity Project Leader for Fairplay 4-H, Electricity Superintendent for the Rice County 4-H Fair, Holyrood American Legion #320 Hines-Grossman Ellinwood in 2004, Veterans of Foreign War of Lyons and Ellinwood, president of the Rice County Farm Bureau and served on the board of Rice County Pork Producers, board of directors of the Bushton Grain Coop 1983-89, Ellinwood Historical Society, Barton County Historical Society, Retired Senior Volunteer program, and Men's Prayer Breakfast.
Survivors include, his wife, Elinor Hiss of the home; a son, Richard Lee and wife Sharon Hiss of Great Bend; a daughter, DeAnn Marie and husband Alan Hauser of Humboldt; a brother, Loren Hiss of Great Bend; two sisters, Verna Hewitt of Ellinwood and Marilyn Button of Great Bend; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bryan Hiss; and a brother, Edwin Hiss.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood with the Rev. Jeff Frakes officiating. Burial will be at the Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 12 to 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
