Journalist. He was the nephew of author Samuel Clemens, who is most recognized as "Mark Twain". Wanting to become a reporter, he was advised by his uncle to approach the newspaper of his choice and offer to work for no wages. Clemens' plan grew out of his own pilot apprenticeship when cub pilots did not receive any wages, but actually paid for the privilege of learning. Moffett was an editor for the "San Francisco Post," the "San Francisco Examiner," a Washington correspondent for the "Examiner," the managing editor for "Cosmopolitan Magazine," an editorial writer for Joseph Pulitzer's "New York World", and a member of the editorial staff of "Collier's Weekly." He also wrote several books on tariffs, currency and government. During a family vacation on the New Jersey shore, he drowned while swimming alone in the ocean. After Samuel Clemens returned from the funeral, the stress of his nephew's death and a failing heart caused him to collapse. He recovered, but his health continued to deteriorate until his own death less than two years later.
