Abner enlisted from Dalton, Murray County, GA and was a member of the Grand Army of Tennessee, 39th Infantry Regiment which was organized in April 1862. The men in his company were recruited from Butts, Whitfield, Bartow, Dade, Fayette, Clayton and Chattahoochee.
The unit was ordered to Knoxville, Tennessee, There it joined the Department of East Tennessee. The regiment served in that command until late in 1862. It was ordered to Vicksburg, Mississippi where it was brigaded under T. H. Taylor in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. After fighting at Champion's Hill, the unit was captured on 4 July 1863 when Vicksburg fell. After being paroled the regiment was assigned to General Cummings Brigade, Stevenson's Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of Tennessee. They went on to participate in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chattanooga to Nashville. It reported 52 casualties at Chattanooga and in December 1863 totaled 243 men and 202 arms.
