US Army Lieutenant General. Born in Prairieburg, Iowa, he graduated from the University of Chicago School of Medicine as a doctor and excepted a commission in the US Army Medical Corps as a Lieutenant in March 1946. During the 1950s, he was Battalion Commander, 7th Medical Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, Korea, Commanding Officer, Medical Research in Colorado and head of US Army Medical Research and Development Command, Washington, D.C. He was Colonel Deputy Commander, US Army Medical Research in 1964, promoted Brigadier General in 1969, Chief Biological and Medical Science Division, Washington, D.C. Promoted Major General in 1972, he was Commanding General, US Army Medical Research Washington, D.C. and was also in charge of M.A.S.H. units in Vietnam, before being appointed Deputy Surgeon General, US Army, in March 1973. In October 1973, he was commissioned the 33rd US Army Surgeon General, at the rank of Lieutenant General and served in office until he retired on September 30, 1977. He died at age 55 in Arlington, Virginia.
