U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Vermont, in 1840, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Elizabethtown, New York. Moving to Calaveras County, California, in 1850, he resumed the practice of law, was Calaveras County District Attorney, (1853-59) and served in the State California Senate, (1862-63). In 1863, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth, Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was editor of the Calaveras Chronicle for several years, collector of Internal Revenue, (1877-81) and devoted himself to horticulture until his death.
