Jo Ed Hill passed away on July 23, 2011, in San Angelo, Texas. He was born on Oct. 21, 1922, in Eldorado, Texas, to Josephine Murchison and John Edward "Ed" Hill. He was a resident of Eldorado and Schleicher County for 84 years until moving to San Angelo in 2006. He was the longest living member of the First United Methodist Church of Eldorado at his death. Jo Ed graduated from Eldorado High School and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. It was there he met the love of his life, Mary Jo Horton and they married on April 16, 1944. They shared the same birth date for over 67 years. Jo Ed proudly served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theatre on the United States Navy ship LST 558 as a Lieutenant. Upon returning from active duty he and Mary Jo moved back to Eldorado where they raised their family. From the late 40's until 1964, he managed the day to day operations of Eldorado Wool Company. In 1958, he was named Director of the First National Bank of Eldorado and in 1964 became an officer of the bank. He retired as President and Chairman in December 1994. Jo Ed served his community on many fronts. He was a member of the Eldorado VFD, Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, was President of the Schleicher County ISD School Board, and served his Church in many capacities. He was honored as Man of the Year by Schleicher County Chamber of Commerce. At age 50, Jo Ed took up the game of golf. He spent many hours with family and friends playing the game he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Margaret Whitten. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jo of San Angelo; daughter Susan Goforth and husband Mack of Dallas; daughter Peggy Sterling and husband Terry of San Angelo; and son David and wife Carrie of Lubbock. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Goforth of Palo Alto, Calif., Andrew Goforth of Houston, Susan Toliver and husband Brent of Sulphur Springs, Anna Sterling of Fort Worth, Michael Hill of Austin, Matthew and Joseph Hill of Lubbock; great-granddaughter Claire Toliver of Sulphur Springs; sister Sarah McCravey of Eldorado; sister-in-law Earlene Horton of Fort Worth; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, at First United Methodist Church in Eldorado with Reverend Steven Rowe officiating under the direction of Kerbow Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 15 N. Divide, Eldorado, TX 76936 or the charity of your choice.
