United States Navy Admiral. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, graduated from Washington University as an engineer and was commissioned a Lieutenant JG in the Civil Engineer Corps, US Navy in 1917. With the start of World War II, he was granted permission to form the first Naval Construction Battalion known as the "Seebees" which used constructional civil workers trained to build military facilities and defend themselves. The Seabees would serve exclusively overseas and due to his efforts the fleet received support in degree unprecedented in the history of naval warfare. In June 1946, Moreell became the first staff corps officer having not graduated from the US Naval Academy to advance to the rank of full Admiral and he successfully managed President Truman problems both in the oil and the coal industry until he retired. In his honor, the US Naval Academy dedicated a memorial in his name on September 21, 1980.
