Emily Lee Armstrong, 89, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, born Tuesday, May 23, 1922, in Cotter, Arkansas to Floyd and Mattie Spangler Toliver, went to be with the LORD on Friday, July 22, 2011 in Baytown, Texas.

Emily is the widow of Cecil Lemon who passed away in March, 1971. Emily was united in marriage with Richard G. Armstrong, widower of Mary Jane Armstrong who passed away in June 1973. Having met at a church social, Emily and Richard became fast friends and fell in love which was followed by their being united in marriage in April, 1974. Emily lived with Richard at their residence in Crosby, Texas, until she joined Richard in July 2009 at The St. James House, Baytown, Texas, an assisted living community.

Emily was very devoted to her family and truly loved being a wife and mother. She was an avid homemaker who loved her kitchen dearly. She enjoyed preparing family meals always capping them with a "man-pleasing" dessert. Her meals were prepared with flare and distinction that had a foundation in the example provided by her mother as she was growing-up in Cotter, Arkansas. Her cooking was so well regarded that for a period of time in the 1980's she contributed her recipes to the community with a column in the Baytown Sun, a community newspaper. Emily's library of cookbooks and endless recipe clippings from all kinds of publications are a treasure trove of experiments and joy that gave her many opportunities to delight her beloved husband Richard with delicious meals as well as visiting friends and family.

Emily delighted for many years in the family garden so carefully and lovingly tended for her by Richard. The garden provided a source of wonderful vegetables that always complimented Emily's meals. While the vegetable garden was prized by Emily there was another prize tenderly and lovingly maintained by Richard and that was their rose garden. Emily loved roses and enjoyed not only their fragrance but their display on the table where meals were served.

Along with cooking and gardening, Emily loved to embroider articles she either displayed within their home or could give to friends. Spare time was filled with watching sports events on television with Richard only after keeping a meticulously clean home, cooking and assisting Richard in their gardens. They were especially fond of all sports and favored watching tennis and golf when their sporting seasons overlapped with football and baseball.

Emily is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Armstrong and parents, Floyd and Mattie Toliver. She is also preceded in death by brothers Kenneth and Gene Toliver.

Emily is survived by her son Ronald C. Lemon of Crosby, sisters Freda Scrivens of Illinois and Joyce Moody of Arkansas and brother Leo Toliver of Idaho. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Edna Armstrong of Crosby and Katharine Armstrong Grooms of Tyler. Emily is survived by very dear friends and neighbors of more than 37 years, Kenneth and Bessie Fielder, who were also beloved friends of Richard for more than 50 years, and other numerous family and friends.

A visitation and memorial service for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday evening, July 26, 2010, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sterling-White Funeral Home Chapel.
