Smith, Terrence "Terry" Eugene
84, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. Terry was born June 29, 1927, in Phoenix, to Albert M. Smith, from Williams, Arizona, and Patricia Josephine Tummins Smith, from Winkleman, Arizona. He attended North High School and graduated from Arizona State University (then Arizona State College). He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. After returning from military service, Terry married Ruth Lamb on April 2, 1948, in Phoenix, and together they had three daughters. He worked for Arizona Public Service for 33 years, starting with digging ditches and eventually retiring from his position as a Manager in Gas Services in 1982. He was a
great husband and father, and many of his interests and hobbies were ones that included his family. He fixed everything in the household, including cars, and built the back yard playground that all the neighborhood kids enjoyed playing in. He played the piano and was a wonderful dancer. He and Ruth could really jitterbug! He was a wonderful story-teller with a great sense of humor, and having lived in Arizona all his life, he had many stories to tell. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, bowling, rock collecting, coaching softball, jewelry-making and golf. His family has many happy memories of road trips to the Pacific Coast, camping, Christmas tree cutting, Sky-Y Family Camp, tubing down the Salt River, and back yard barbeques. He and Ruth belonged to Pinetop Lakes Country Club and Villa de Paz Golf Club. Terry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Lamb Smith, his daughters, Sandra L. Alcumbrac (Kurt) and Adrienne D. Hogate (Rob), his granddaughters, Torill B. Smith (Josh) and Jamie M. Alcumbrac, all of Phoenix, Arizona, cousin, Colleen Tummins Goffigon, who also attended North High School and now resides in California. Terry is preceded in death by his father, Albert M. Smith, his mother, Patricia Tummins Smith Harris, his step-father, James W. Harris, and his beloved daughter, Brenna Louise Smith. He will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with a memorial service to be held during a cooler time of the year. His family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff at Covenant Southwest Hospice for their warm and professional care during his last weeks, as well as his numerous friends and extended family who contributed to many happy times. If desired, contributions may be made in Terry's name to the City of Hope, Duarte, California. Please visit the online Guest Book at www.obits.azcentral.com ARIZONA REPUBLIC 24 JULY 2011
