Became a sailor. On Sept. 5, 1864, he joined the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Artillery volunteers (Union) as a substitute for another soldier. McCarthy was a clerk in the military. He was discharged Aug. 25, 1865. He died in 1946 at the age of 102 and was cremated.
The unclaimed cremated remains of 14 veterans and three military wives were laid to rest at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery July 26 with full military honors. The remains were found and identified by the Missing in America Project, a nonprofit organization.
