Peggy Sue Winston was born to Maggie Sue Nesbitt Watson and Harry Pennimaun Watson, Sr. Maggie Sue died one month after Peggy was born. Her original name was Hallie Peggy Watson. There was an in-family adoption and Jake & Bess Wells adopted Peggy. Her name was changed to Peggy Sue Wells.

Peggy's biological family had 8 children and she was a very sick little baby from nursing on her mom who was very ill. Her father Harry Pennimaun Watson, Sr. had to support his family and it was impossible to care for such a small infant. He allowed Maggie Sue's lst cousin Richard Henry Wells & wife Bessie Franklin Wells to adopt Peggy.

Peggy was close with all of her siblings and she adored her "Daddy Watson" and spent summers with him and her siblings. Peggy really loved and adored Jake & Bess Wells and always regarded them as her parents. It was said that Harry Pennimaun was always sad about having to give up his little girl for adoption but he had done a wonderful thing for Peggy and probably saved her life by having her cared for by Jake and Bess Wells.
