Jean (John) Baptist Arcan was born on April 14, 1813 at Versailles, France. His family moved several time before arriving in Illinois He married Abigail Ericksen around 1846 and prior to leaving for California they had a son Charles. They were part of the Sand Walking Company wagon train that was guided by Capt. Jefferson Hunt who was guiding them along a route that wagons had never tried before but that had been travel by horseback. Along the way they met another train who said they had a map of a short cut. Capt. Hunt warned them it was ill advised but most of the 100 wagons decided on the short cut. Unfortunately the short cut led them to a sheer cliff that extended miles in both directions. Some trains turned back to catch up with Cpt Hunt but others stayed and eventually found a way through the desert and unfortunate right into the heart of Death Valley where they spent weeks waiting for help. They ended up spending Christmas 1849 in the valley. Eventually they were rescued and found their way out.
The family Settled in the Santa Cruz area and had a daughter Juliette (Julia) but she died and was the first burial in the Santa Cruz Evergreen Cemetery. They had two more daughters Julia Madeline and Abigail.
Arcan was a carpenter by trade and built several buildings and homes in Santa Cruz. He purchased a block of land on Main Street and built Arcan Block, which included his home and a Masonic meeting hall. He died at age 56
