US Congressman. He served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1866. Graduating from the Columbian College (now George Washington University) School of Law in 1868, he eventually settled in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, where he practiced law. Having served in the South Dakota State House of Representatives, he was elected to the United States Congress from South Dakota, where he served from 1907 until his death in 1908.
