Note: daughter of John Kerr and Elizabeth Happenstell Kerr per her 1930 Jefferson county, Iowa death record. Evidently her mother remarried and the F/A/G memorial entry for the mother was entered by another contributor using the hyphenated "Kerr-Hammer" married surname, which made finding her memorial tricky.

Transcription note: this obituary is transcribed as nearly verbatim as possible from the microfilmed image found at the Fairfield Public Library (transcribed by this contributor March 20, 2016), but the original text as published tended to ignore standard spelling and punctuation rules, so the text sometimes does not read as grammatically proper as it might otherwise would.

OBITUARY

Mrs. M. W. Roth

Mary Margaret Kerr was born in Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania on September 15, 1850 and grew to womanhood there. On June 3rd, 1879 she was united in marriage to Milton W. Roth and came to Fairfield, Iowa where she resided until her death which occurred at their home Thursday morning October 30th 1930. To them were born three children, Dr. J. A. of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Walter K. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Florence E. at home all of whom were at her bed side during her last illness. She is survived also by three grand children and the following sisters and brother, Miss Jennie Kerr and Mrs. Harry Keller of Philadelphia, Mrs. L. A.Scharf of Sellngsgrove, Penn. (sic. spelling ??), and J. M. Hammer of this city. Her first serious illness occurred about five years ago and since then her husband and daughter have been her constant and loving companions ever planning for her comfort and happiness. On June 3rd 1929 it was Mr. and Mrs. Roth's rare privilege to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at which time the family were all together for the happy occasion. Mrs. Roth's ready wit and her keen interest in the every day affairs of life and those about her endeared her to her many friends.

She was devoted to her home and family and loyal to her friends and her church where she was a faithful attendant and worker as long as her health permitted and to the P.E.O. sisterhood of which she had been a member for over forty years. Her greatest happiness came through her service and thought of others. Impressive funeral services were held Saturday afternoon November 1st from the Murray Funeral home and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Gilbert Voorhies of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery.

We, whose privilege it was to know her intimately are glad of the many happy memories of our life together.
