Preston Brown, son of John Mason and Mary Owen Preston Brown, was an American army officer, reaching the rank of Brigadier General, during his service in World War I. He had an impressive military career which included Chief of Staff in the 2nd Infatry Division, Chateau-Thierry and Saint-Mihiel (1918); chief of Staff of the 4th Army Corp; Commanding General of the 3rd Infantry Division (serving though the Battle of Meuse-Argonne); Assistant Chief of Staff at General Headquarters in occupied German territory; appointed instructor in Army General Staff College (1919); awarded the Distinguished Service Medal; acting commander of U. S. Army War College and appointed Commanding General of the 3rd Infantry Brigade (1921); Commandant of the Panama Canal Zone (1928-1932); retired to Martha's Vineyard, Massasachusetts in 1936. He married Susan Ford Dorrance in 1901. They had a son, Dorrance Brown who died in 1936. Cave Hill records show his burial to be on July 5, 1948.
