The Naples Record 28 September 1892

Died, at his borne on Powell Hill, Saturday Sept. 24, Isaac S. Powell, in

the 22nd year of his age. The grim destroyer made sure of a vital point when he hurled his lance, and after one week of intense suffering, death came to his release. He is at rest. For the deeply afflicted family we can only pray that God will temper the wind to the shorn lambs. It has well and truthfully been said that death loves a shining mark. Truly this has been verified in the death of Isaac Powell. Only those who have passed through a similar affliction, those whose homes have been darkened by the death of some dear one can truly feel and sympathize with this deeply sorrowing father and mother. Yet through the dark cloud that overspreads their horizon the silver lining shines out in full resplendence. They will have joy and comfort in the, thought that their dearly beloved son was indeed such a shining mark. The comfort of home by his filial love, in the development into a perfect upright manhood, by the high love and esteem of his host of friends and acquaintances, for his friends were legion, as was shown by the great numbers who assembled to pay him the last loving tribute.

As Bryant says, he has joined the innumerable caravan that is moving to that mysterious realm. He has wrapped the drapery of his coach around him and laid down to pleasant dreams. He is dead, but the beautiful influences of his short life will go on and on until eternity alone can reveal its extent. Isaac's short life had been a strictly home life, with the exception of the time while at school, and even then the interest of home was uppermost in his mind, for he had often been heard to say: "I wish I were at home today for father needs me," or, "I am afraid mother will overwork, there is to much to do." This showing that his thoughts were ever clinging filially and lovingly around the home that was

so dear to him. School life was characterized by the same thoughtful, honest, faithful deportment as home life - an honored, trusted, much loved pupil, very studious, never neglecting his books, but ever found pouting over them early, and sometimes late. Last June he graduated from Naples Union School with very high honors. His masterful oration, the subject of which was the "Usefulness of Discontent." breathed forth his aspirations after the grand good and useful things that help to make the ideal manhood. His teachers, as well as other teachers connected with school, were loud in speaking of his worth. He had the honor of

casting one vote in his short life and along that line, as well as in

every other sphere, he showed forth sterling principles. We have heard him speak boldly, and firmly for temperance, and this will be one of the silver linings to the dark cloud to cheer and gladden the hearts of the parents who are so nobly standing for the right; and doing all they can to stamp out the deadly traffic from our land, to think their beloved son cast one vote to strengthen the cause ere the silver chords were broken. In the homes where be had boarded and roomed during his school days in Naples, he was honored and loved, for who could know him but to love him ne brought sunshine and joy, comfort and sympathy

if needed. "He was one of those noble characters of which Cowper speaks — graced with gentle manners and fine sense and would never ruthlessly place foot upon a worm.

The funeral services were held from his home, conducted according to the order of the Friends, led by Rev. E. Anthony, of Naples, who spoke very beautifully and sympathetically to the family and friends.

His remains were carried to Rose Ridge, followed by a large company of relatives, friends and neighbors.
