During the Civil War Eli Darwin Gilson enlisted in Company C, 176th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at 40 years of age, Aug. 16, 1864 for a 1-year term of service as shown in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. IX, page 536. He was discharged June 14, 1865 with the rank of Private. His date of birth has been recorded as Jan. 15, 1824 but his date of death has been
recorded as Oct. 2, 1871 and Oct. 2, 1874. The Federal Government's Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) veterans' burial survey conducted in the 1930s during the Great Depression verifies that he served in the Civil War and is buried in Brighton Township Cemetery in Lorain County, Ohio. His name and unit are on the cemetery tree trunk veterans' memorial at the cemetery. Upon his death, his wife, Sarah Ann Gilson, applied for a widow's pension but not until Nov. 15, 1879. Why she waited so long remains unknown. The application was approved and issued as Certificate #208917. Sarah Ann drew this pension until her death in 1914. Eli should not be confused with Eli D. Gilson, whom the W.P.A. erroneously claimed was the man who served in the 176th Regiment. This Eli D. Gilson is a non-veteran, buried in Erie Street Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. (See Find A Grave Memorial #112996948). The W.P.A. survey confused men with the same name time and time again.
