Alma Cilmon Erwin Phillips went to be with her Lord on March 6, 2011 at the age of 95 years. Born at home on her grandfather Benjamin Franklin Erwin's farm at Davis Switch, Texas on May 27, 1915, she lived her entire life in Atascosa County, Texas. Alma's early education was received at the country school in Davis Switch. When a more advanced education was required, Alma left her family home and moved into Charlotte, Texas a few miles away, and enrolled in the Charlotte schools. She lived with a Mrs. Beakley and worked along with Mrs. Beakley for the telephone company as a switch board operator (Number, please). In 1932, she moved to Jourdanton, Texas, to live and work in the Alcott Hotel, attending her last year of high school in Jourdanton. The only child in her family to finish high school, she graduated as valedictorian of her 1933 class (as did her future husband 2 years earlier). In 1934, Alma married Alvin Al Phillips of Jourdanton in the Methodist parsonage, both families being long-time Methodists. Together, she and Alvin worked three different dairy operations; first a Manual-milk business and a home delivery service, and then a Grade-A dairy, both located in Jourdanton where the present-day high school baseball field is located; then they moved the family and their Grade-A dairy to the Tank Hollow area near Poteet, Texas. As soon as their 4 children were all in school, Alma started her own business, which she operated for 24 years: the Aggie Snack Shack, a fast food restaurant across from the public schools in Poteet, serving and enjoying thousands of school kids. As her children were growing up, Alma taught Sunday School and Bible School in the Jourdanton and Poteet Methodist Churches. She was also the youth's MYF sponsor at the Methodist Church in Poteet for many years, as well as sponsoring other youth activities (teen parties and dances, and having parties for young people in her home in Jourdanton and later in Poteet). She was also a sports enthusiast when her children were involved. Alma was Worthy Matron of the Poteet Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in the late 1950's. After their last child finished Poteet High School, Alma and Alvin moved to Pleasanton, Texas in the late1960's, and she and Alvin had many good years ahead of them to travel (domestically and abroad), playing golf and bridge, involving themselves in their church, their home, and their yard, and enjoying their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After 65 years together, Alvin passed away in 1999. Alma started playing golf in her late 40's and was still playing after her 93rd birthday, making 3 holes-in-one in that 40 plus years of playing; she played bridge into her 95th year, and renewed her driver's license when she was 93 years of age. As she had done years before with her grandson, she helped teach kids to play golf when she was past 90 years old. She loved being around people; adults and children alike. Alma is preceded in death by her parents, Ira H. Erwin and Mary Alice Tucker Erwin, and all of her siblings; also by her husband Alvin "Al" Phillips, and her granddaughter Karen Sue McCampbell Wells. She is survived by her 4 children and 7 grandchildren: a son, Dr. Gerald Bruce Phillips, M.D. and wife, Chris, and their children: Susan Phillips of Pleasanton, Dr. Bruce Phillips, M.D. and wife Diane of Dallas, Texas, and Jeffrey Phillips and wife Karen of Austin, Texas; daughter Peggy McCampbell and husband John of Pleasanton and their son John Bradley McCampbell and his wife Dawn of Yantis, Texas, Texas; daughter Lana Cowley and her husband Morris of Poteet and their daughter Lisa Wilkins of Poteet, Texas; and daughter Judy Crews and her husband Mal of Woodsboro, Texas, and their children Lee Crews and wife Stacey of Richmond, Texas, and Leigh Anne Walker and husband Tom of La Grange, Texas. Surviving her are 14 great-grandchildren: Megan and Laura Wells, Richard and Cara Phillips, Paige, Chase, and Colby Phillips, Ryan and Courtney Crews, Hannah McCampbell, Kayla and Haley Wilkins, and Kenzie and Ty Walker. Visitation will be held at Hurley Funeral Home, 118 West Oaklawn Road, Pleasanton from 3:00PM - 8:00PM on Thursday, March 10, 2011. The family will receive friends between the hours of 6:00PM - 8:00PM on Thursday evening. The funeral service will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Pleasanton. Interment will follow at the Jourdanton City Cemetery in Jourdanton, Texas.
