Carl W. Vail, 68, of 215 DuBoise Rd., died suddenly Thursday, June 20, 1961, in Talahassee, Fla. Mr Vail was with his wife on a Florida trip.

For many years Mr. Vail was active in civic affairs, and in area Boy Scouts of America activities.

A former resident of the present Seventh Ward, he served four terms as supervisor, from 1944 through 1951, when it was known as the Fourth Ward. He was a member of important committees of the board, including the chairmanship of the Health Committee.

He was formerly on the Board of Managers of Tompkins County Hospital.

Mr. Vail was an engineer associated with the Morse Chain Co. for nearly 35 years. For the past five years he was an engineer with the National Cash Register Co.

In scouting, Mr. Vail held the posts of president and vice-president of the Louis Agassiz Fuertes Council. He was also holder the Silver Beaver Award, highest Council award for contributions to Scouting.

Mr. Vail also was on the Board of Health, a member of the Ithaca Rotary Club and American Legion. He was an ambulance driver in France with the U. S. Army during World War I. He was decorated by the French government with the Croix de Guerre for his service.

He was graduated from Cornell University with the bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1923. Mr. Vail also attended Columbia University.

He is survived by his widow. Lillian S. Vail; a son, Carl W. Vail Jr., both of Ithaca; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Ingersoll of Bordentown, N. J.; a brother, Donald of Ridgewood, N. J.; two sisters, Miss Eileen Vail of Paramus, N. J. and Mrs. Rosemary Anders Newburgh RD 4, and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are Incomplete and will be announced at the Convenience of the family.
