It is reported that John was held in high regards by the Indians, who lived on the Seneca Nation of Indians Reservation near Salamanaca, New York, as he had saved a young Indian from drowning. His success with his car dealership was in part due to the number of Indians who bought cars from him and he would arrange financing for them, as they were often discriminated against by lending institutions
