U.S. Congressman. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army in 1863 and served until the close of the war. After the war, he attended Center Academy, Yale College and engaged in the banking business in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was burgess of Norwalk, chairman of the board of school visitors and a member of the Connecticut State Senate, (1886-87). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the eight succeeding Congresses, serving until 1913. In 1915, he was again elected to the Sixty-fourth and Sixty-fifth Congresses and served until his death.
