John D. Samples
John Dayton Samples, 90, of Xenia, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Hospitality Home West in Xenia.
He was born March 18, 1913, in West Virginia, the son of the late A.W. Sample and Laura Smith Samples.
On June 1, 1946, he married Phyllis Pritt Samples, who survives.
Surviving are two sisters, Pearl Samples Hall of Cherverly, Md., and Ruth Karickoff and husband, Phillip, of Belington.
He was preceded in death by a baby brother.
He was a member of Faith Community United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 49 AF&AM, and was a past patron of Aldora Chapter 262 Order of the Eastern Star.
John loved bowling and gardening.
He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College and taught elementary school in the Upshur County school system. He volunteered for military service in 1942 and spent about 46 months in the African Campaign.
John retired from the Research and Development System at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in June 1973 after 30 years.
He also volunteered at Greene Memorial Hospital as a Meals on Wheels driver for over 20 years.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Donald Butcher will officiate and interment will follow in the Lee Cemetery at Kanawha Head. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, American Legion Post 7, and Chapters 5 and 36 of Disabled American Veterans will conduct military honors at the graveside
