US Congressman. He was a member of John C. Calhoun's short-lived Nullifier Party, a states' rights group that pushed to enable state governments to nullify federal laws within their borders, and served as such for most of his eight terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1826 to 1833. In November of 1832, Singleton was elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-Third Congress but did not live to take his seat, dying in North Carolina en route to Washington for the opening of the First Session. His replacement would be Robert Blair Campbell. Singleton was buried at Congressional Cemetery. The Nullifiers were absorbed into the Democratic Party in 1839.
